Spring blanket....

Yippee! The Spring blanket is finished! And it is still Spring!

Don’t get me wrong, I have really enjoyed making this blanket, but there is nothing quite like finishing a big project.
I wasn’t loving the white border, but then I found an edging in Crochet Unravelled by Claire Bojczuk. It is called “cluster edging” and consists of a treble cluster, one picot and another treble cluster. I just did 2 trebles, a picot and 2 trebles though. Why? Something to do with being too lazy to get up and find the book and trying to create it by memory... at least I’m honest!

So, once the now “double cluster” border was on it’s merry way, I began being a lot happier about the border. The border consists of 3 rows of treble clusters and the final fourth row is the "double cluster"edging. I officially LOVE this blanket.

I may disappoint a few of you dear readers because I am not an organised person and I cannot tell you how many balls of yarn I used or how much the blanket cost to make. I have made bunting and a cushion and stool cover out of the same yarn colours along the way... The yarn used was predominantly Stylecraft, with the odd ball of Woolcraft yarn used, simply because I liked the pink and coral colours.

The pattern I used was from Yarning blog and I used a 4mm hook. It is a heavy, warm blanket. I know a few of you have emailed to ask how I joined the squares and there is no fancy method, just slip stitch. I tend to join 9 squares at a time and then make up a panel consisting of four 3 by 3 squares. I have tried to sew in ends and join panels along the way, because this gave me the impetus to carry on. There are 216 squares, 12 by 18 rows. The blanket was made to be big enough to go over the 3-seater sofa.

It has been so lovely when I have received a comment or email telling me I have inspired you to start your own Spring blanket. It is well worth the time and effort, believe me!

I truly believe I would have one or two cushion covers with white borders if I had not started blogging... documenting the progress of the blanket and receiving so many kind comments, has kept me going with this project. It is quite an undertaking producing a crochet blanket and I truly admire the people out there that can do one after the other.

I can't decide which sofa - the 2 or 3 seater to put
the blanket on...This is the two seater sofa. I don't know
if I'm ready to let people SIT on it!
So there you have it.... my second blanket under my belt in the first six months of being a crocheter! It wouldn't have been half as much fun without you all. x

Oooooo.... I forgot it is the last day of April... here is the April mosaic...

  11. It's just beautiful! I love those colours - you're very talented with your colour combining. And I must also confess to deep jealousy of your rocking chair. I've wanted to have one for years, and now I'm determined to get myself one!

  17. Bravo! The blanket (or afghan as we say over here) is lovely draped over the back of the sofa. Your choice of edging with that picot detail is perfect.

Now...you've reminded me of a large granny circle-in-a-square afghan that I began last year, in mostly neutral and blue to green shades. Perhaps I will get on back to that project, and try to finish it.

Of course, that would mean stopping about four or five other knitting projects!

    Cheers!

  23. Ooooooo... what a lovely surprise when I came home from work to see all of your wonderful comments! You are all so kind. Becca, I have thought about hanging it on the wall, as I haven't put anything on the walls in the dining area yet!
I secretly want to put it on the two-seater sofa and ban anyone from sitting there, then I can look and admire it when I'm sat in the lounge watching TV...

  24. OMG!!! Your blanket is just amazing. I have been a crocheter for as long as I can remember and I never had the guts to make a blanket. I just am not that patient. I wish I was like you though. Your blanket is just gorgeous!

  31. That is beautiful!! Makes me want to get busy & work on my hexagon blanket done in similar colors. I can give that one my full attention now that I've finished up my Attic 24-inspired Granny Stripe blanket.

  32. Wow ohhh wow! Well done. Agree on the great benefit of blogging big projects like this. It keeps you going even when you feel like giving up as ou have "only 120 more squares to go" or "78 more squares to join" or "211 more ends to fasten off"... That is my dislike part. Fastening off ends. You have done an amazing job, staying true to your color theme (I wonder what my color theme is???... Never thought about that). It is fantastic. And if you asked me - no one would sit on this blanket if it was mine. Naaaah. Cuddle up underneath, but don't sit on it! It is toooo precious.

  34. The colors and images in your April mosaic are beautiful and that Spring Blanket is absolutely gorgeous. I learned to crochet about 25 years ago and have just really started doing more projects since blogging over the past two years -- so many inspiring bloggers and crocheters out there. But have never undertaken a project as big as this. Bravo and best wishes, Tammy

  35. Lovely stuff.
I'm learning to crochet too, but have only managed to make a few toys for my little ones so far! Must find more time to crochet gorgeous things for myself-your home and projects are very inspirational.
I've also just started blogging and am really enjoying it.

  40. This is totally AMAZE-BALLS! I love it :D I am also excited that you work. SO many of my favorite blogs are authored by women who are stay at home mothers. I really love this. It's giving me some small hope to start working on the cover to my three-seater sofa that my 4 year old has demolished. I REALLY Love-Love the colors as well :) Great job!

  41. This is so beautiful! You should be so proud of yourself! I can't believe you have only been crocheting for 6 months - amazing!

The colours are perfect - they just bring happiness and joy!

  42. Wow, that's a lovely blanket, such pretty, fresh colours. Two blankets in 6 months is not bad at all! It took me 18 months for one and I thought I was doing well.

  46. You could always weigh the blanket if you want to know how much yarn it used - then work out from the yardage of a 50 or 100g ball how many yards/metres you used? I love details like how much yarn I've used, a little sad I know...

It's a gorgeous blanket, enjoy it! xxx

  48. Congratulations on finishing. Such a lot of work and it's beautiful. I'm envious of your patience as I'm yet to tackle anything of this size but it must be so rewarding to have completed it. Well done!

  49. I started a blanket nearly exactly the same as this about a year ago and I'm STILL working on the damn thing! They don't tell you they take so long; in fact, I've given up on the squares and have now decided the squares will be a centrepiece and it will have a massive border! I love working with white as well as I think you'll agree that it looks fresh, clean and stylish.

Thank you for sharing your work with us.

  50. This is just so beautiful...I started crochet just a few weeks ago, but really want to give this a go...maybe a smaller version though!! can I ask what kind of yarn you used...I am getting confused with wool/acrylic/chunky etc. etc.

Thanks for the inspiration! Lisa x

  51. Hi Lisa, I use double knitting acrylic yarn with a 4mm hook. The brand I use is Stylecraft available at www.masons.co.uk.

There is a wide variety of colours and I think it is good choice for beginners as it is not expensive. 100g ball is approximately £1.50. Hope this helps and thank you for the lovely comment x
