Sometimes having a little spend perks me up no end, and that happened yesterday. I found the book "Granny chic" by Dottie Angel and Ted and Agnes in The Works shop for £5.99... if you haven't yet purchased this book and you live in the UK, then head on down to The Works and pick it up for this bargain price. Only do this of course if you are a lover of granny chic! Whilst I may not be making any of the projects any time soon, I have enjoyed looking at the photographs and gathering a few interior decoration ideas.
This owl tealight holder is another purchase, this time from Marks & Spencer for £7.50...
You will notice from the first picture that I have also been experimenting with crochet felt... I hand-felted the above hexagon using washing up liquid, warm water and plenty of rubbing inbetween "shocking" the wool with cold water. I wanted to have control of how far I felted the sample, and I wanted to keep a little of the stitch definition.

I like the result. Thank you very much for your comments on felting crochet, I found them really helpful. I don't think I would want to risk machine felting a crochet piece, so I will stick to hand-felting, even though it is hard physical work. I've decided to make granny squares with the Herdywool and edge them all in pink. In the back of my mind I envisage either a cushion cover or two, or a footstool or pouffe cover.
Thanks for the heads-up on that book, will be dropping into the Works tomorrow - I love that shop!

I have machine felted crochet and knit pieces and had great luck. I crocheted a hexagon bag and felted it and it looks great.

That looks really nice - is it soft?
ReplyDeleteYes, I would say it is soft. Because the yarn is chunky, it has produced a very solid fabric.
DeleteI think I seen that book yesterday! The felted hexagon looks lovely, such great ideas!
ReplyDeleteI love how your hexagon turned out! This would make a great purse too!
ReplyDeleteIt looks lovely, definatly worth all the hard work handfelting.
ReplyDeleteLoving your felted hexagon, what a fabulous effect, especially with that scrummy yarn!

ReplyDeleteLove the owl tealight holder! So cute!!!!!!
Lovely colours, the book is fab, wish I'd seen it in the works first! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for letting us know about the book being on sale at The Works, great price. Would love to hear your opinion/review on the content!
ReplyDeleteI have the owl tea light holder from M&S too, it's a brilliant buy! X
cute
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get a copy of the book!! Pretty hexie!! xo Heather
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for the tip on the book. There's no shop near here so I've ordered my copy online.... (can't wait!!). I like your take on the felted crochet. I think a felted crocheted handbag would look really cute. Pati xx
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the felting info in your posts. It's a technique that interests me, and I do want to do some experimenting. (Think that I am now well over a long ago unexpected felting of a handknit sweater that a boyfriend achieved just trying to be helpful with our washing machine.) Guess that he was sort of ahead of the style curve!

I tried to hand-felt a bowl I crocheted last week by using boiling water from the kettle, some washing-up liquid and a potato masher!!!It didn't work, even though the wool was specifically for felting so I had to put it into the washing machine on a boil wash, along with a pair of jeans, which for me is a total waste of time and energy. I should take a few tips from my sister who shoved my nephew's(her son's)new cashmere pullover which had just cost him the best part of £90, into the washing machine - it felted beautifully!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend, my friend. x
I have some lovely felting yarn and you have inspired me to make a pot holder (I am always burning my hands on saucepan handles!) x
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the heads up on the book! I had a lovely time browsing the shelves in my local branch. You've saved me a pretty penny. The felting of crochet looks like an interesting concept. Look forward to your updates on that...x
